Vuma Backs Nigel Tennis Club

As one of the oldest tennis clubs in Ekurhuleni, the Nigel Tennis Club has stood the test of time. Despite having a remarkable past, the club has recently endured neglect, leaving it without essential tennis equipment and in a poor condition. Fortunately, they have received support from Vuma, the country’s largest fibre network operator.

Having first opened its doors in 1950, the club has been a pillar of the community for many years, empowering young people through sports. Even in the face of challenges over the years, the club has not deterred its dedication to provide the youth of their community with a facility that helps keeping the children active and in a safe environment. Sadly, the lack of proper equipment has become a problem, dampening the spirits of both coaches and players.

Riana de Lange, a coach at the club said, “For decades, this place has been a sanctuary for young people in the area, keeping them off the streets and out of trouble. By partnering with organisations like Vuma, who share the same passion of empowering the youth in our communities, we can charge forward towards making sure that we can keep providing a safe space for young people to do something rewarding.”

The impact of Vuma’s involvement goes beyond just proving access to equipment. By empowering the club, Vuma aims to inspire young players, both skilled and novice, to be exposed to, and explore varied sports and skills.

Taylor Kwong, CSI and Marketing Manager at Vuma adds, “We believe in investing in communities, and the Nigel Tennis Club's profound impact on the youth in Nigel aligns perfectly with our brand purpose. By partnering with them to revive their facility, we hope to empower the young players and nurture their talent, potentially leading them towards a brighter future.”

“We hope this support will help reignite a love for tennis in the area. If Novak Djokovic could begin his love affair with tennis in an empty swimming pool, then who knows what talent we may be able to nurture here. This partnership could help someone’s Wimbledon dream come true,” said Taylor Kwong.

Nigel Tennis Club is set to write a new chapter adding to its long history and with enough luck, it may help the club could be home to one of the country’s next tennis greats.
