Vuma celebrates connecting over 670 schools to free 1Gbps fibre internet
To date, Vuma and its partner Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have connected over 670 schools located along its existing fibre deployment route to a free 1Gbps fibre line at no charge, allowing tomorrow’s leaders to start taking their first steps towards brighter, more connected futures.
The digitisation of South Africa’s school curriculum is a major priority, and Vuma is doing its part to make this a reality for more schools across the country through its Fibre to Schools programme, providing fast, reliable internet access to a wealth of online learning resources and opportunities.
The benefits of fibre connectivity in education
Fast, stable, and reliable internet connectivity can change the South African education landscape as we know it, allowing school-goers and educators to benefit from online content and information that is relevant, up to date and accurate.
For learners, this means having access to engaging, interactive learning materials such as educational games and apps. This also allows learners to access the latest versions of set books and other text books without spending hundreds of rands on new books.
Fibre internet gives educators the upper hand in preparing teaching material that is of value and based on the latest and most effective teaching principles. It also streamlines internal processes such as grading and record-keeping, so that every student’s progress and areas for improvement can be constantly monitored.
These are just some of the high-level benefits of having free fibre access in schools. On a more big picture scale, fibre for classrooms propels South Africa further into the digital era so that the youth are better prepared to enter into a world of work increasingly reliant on digital skills and knowledge.
As a leading fibre-to-the-home provider, Vuma considers it a responsibility to help where it can. As such, the Fibre to Schools initiative, which was officially launched in 2015, is based on the sentiment, “Because we can, we must”, which in fact guides all of Vuma’s business decisions.
