Vuma connects 700th school to fast, free fibre – and counting

Our ethos remains rooted in the words, ‘Because We Can, We Must’, which is why Vuma is committed to ensuring free fibre infrastructure is provided, without fear or favour, to every registered primary and high school located in existing Vuma fibre areas.

South Africa is brimming with exponential potential – all it takes is a good opportunity to unlock it. Reliable, equitable access to lightning-fast connectivity is exactly that for the youth of South Africa, which is why Vuma is thrilled and extremely proud to announce that 700 schools (and counting) have officially been connected to fast fibre internet through its Fibre to Schools programme. It’s also important to note that while we celebrate this milestone, it is a pit stop on a long journey to ensuring that every learner, educator and primary and secondary institution is empowered to be the extraordinary people they’re destined to become.

Woodville Primary School, based in Cape Town, is the 700th school that Vuma has provided with a free 1Gbps fibre broadband connection through our Fibre to Schools programme that was launched in 2015. All 700 schools, comprising over 525 000 learners and 30 000 educators, are now able to access a wealth of digital literacy tools and online educational opportunities.

The schools that are connected through the programme also form part of a valued network. This is important to Vuma as a company that is purpose-led and engaged in promoting the well-being of the communities around our business, as it keeps us accountable, ensuring that we do more than just install fibre infrastructure, but that we continue to offer support to the schools, their staff, learners and wide communities on an ongoing basis.

In this way we have also created connections with other like-minded businesses and organisations to make an even bigger impact in the lives of people within and around these schools; iSchool Africa, goGoGogo, MyWalk, and RuraTech are just some of the generous entities that have contributed and helped make a difference to many of the Fibre to Schools beneficiaries along the way.

Vuma thanks all individuals, businesses, organisations and community members for their support in this journey – we could not have made it this far, and would not be empowered to keep going, if it weren’t for all of you.
